Only One Time

Posted in Flash Fiction with tags , , , , , , , , on February 22, 2019 by dustus

Through stewing August air of intermittent fireflies blinking, Mother hollers from the back porch.  We strain eyes tracking the baseball’s flight.

“Just a minute!” I shout.

“Dinner’s getting cold!  You can’t even see that damn ball.  You don’t need another shiner!”

“That happened only one time!” I roar indignantly.  My “friend” laughs skipping hurriedly homeward.

Deepfake Tribulation

Whiskey-shooting away professional tormenting failure, The Plaintiff, slipped fumbling sideways off a sky-high cliff.  Your Honor, his fractured ego denied having been pushed!  As if privacy exists in our defamatory deepfake world.  Consequently, it took many arduous years of gradual rehabilitation before self-loathing dried and creative fire reemerged furiously brighter than The Defendants’ life-threatening malice.

Private Sandman – #FlashFiction

Posted in Flash Fiction, One Shoot, One Stop Poetry with tags , , , , , , , on April 30, 2011 by dustus

Squad radio D.O.A, our unit maneuvers into position—digging the left flank. Sandbags, Sarin-gassing;  flesh of women and children burst shielding salvos. “We’re outnumbered, Sarge!”  Hellfire overrunning our battalion. “Retreat!” Full-scale mortar rounds; Nighthawks laying bombs. As I suffocate under sand, readying to pull that goddamn ring-pin when deafening alarm blare delivers me from self-destruction.

Former Drill Sargent Haines boots him out for dropping F-bombs…. Freshman returns following morning. Haines halts him at the threshold.

“Change your attitude?”

“Fuck off!” Kid pulls a blade.

Haines decks him and the knife disappears.

Haines’s cuffed; marched outside….

Cop asks, “Where’s your car?”

“Over there.”

“Get in and don’t come back to Batterson.”

7 1/2-year-old soccer uniformed Titan. She thumb-twiddles texting opposite Dad’s dividing laptop. His scream on call, “I lost $400,000 in equity!”

“Dad, my game…”

Ignoring daughter, insults ensue; breakfasters cringe…

“Stop whining…” He orders daughter, “Take my tray!”

“But, Daaaad… I don’t know where it goes.”

“Quit being a goddamn baby, and just do it!”

Concentrated Backwash – #FridayFlash

Beside myself, this hack saw the arcade; skeeballing hours roll, earning red cross lifeguard wife beater.  Ahhh, oceanside—Na+, spawn,
crustaceans crawling… High-strung tentacle.

Hear sonorous billows drift. Bobbing weight lunatic. Mistaken tampon for sea life. There! Culture germinates flotsam in shallow glass bottom petri.  Seething, concentrated backwash—sorry, couldn’t help thinking of Snooki.

“His Break” ( #FlashFiction )

Posted in Flash Fiction with tags , , , , , , , , , on March 31, 2011 by dustus

4 am in Times Square pizzaria. I’m chasing plain slices with large drafts, catching a buzz beside stars…

“Fugetaboutit!  It’s art… Play with your heart! …Play with your soul! …Play with your goddamn balls!”

Fist-bumps. Hacking laughter…

“Listen, Slim. My break’s over.”

Danny hugs his musician brother; then returns to toss a pile of dough.
