When winter days feel empty
Ahead of spring’s warm thrill

It gets me through the worst of time
To think she loves me still

But that’s just wishful thinking
Straight Bourbon with a pill
When coming down to realize
It’s not worth feeling ill

While I Breathe…

While I breathe, I hope
Love will lead to peace

Home within my heart will bloom
From buried seeds of grief

While I breathe, I hope
As I live, I seek

Solace past forgiveness
Strength when feeling weak

With every exhalation
To full capacity
There’s a spirit one perceives
Beyond each sense and dream

Artistic Freedom’s Waive

They shall claim self-defense a joke
Having drawn-up silencing guns
In taking acquisitional aim
Subject to defamation lies for protection
Behind the rub of tarnished legal cloaks
Nondisclosing their collective loud mouth
Whose soul remains forever sold
Alongside artistic freedom’s waive

It felt like magic followed me

Foreshadowing my youth
When I would trip upon this earth

And see stars coming to

Only One Time

Through stewing August air of intermittent fireflies blinking, Mother hollers from the back porch.  We strain eyes tracking the baseball’s flight.

“Just a minute!” I shout.

“Dinner’s getting cold!  You can’t even see that damn ball.  You don’t need another shiner!”

“That happened only one time!” I roar indignantly.  My “friend” laughs skipping hurriedly homeward.

An Abject Prayer

Posted in Poetry, Short Poems with tags , , , , , , , on February 19, 2019 by dustus

It’s not because she’ll tease me
Or make me wish I’m there
Trick my mind to thinking
Someone truly cares

It’s not the song within my heart
Or how she can’t compare
To any love I’ve ever known
Beyond an abject prayer

Spiritual Crisis

Writing kept me sharp
Tempers my dull mind
But this is not the type of note
That makes me feel alive

Royal Pain

Bring me that Court Jester
He thinks he is a scribe
I shall kill this royal pain
Snuff out his silly life!

Send him to the guillotine
We’ll watch his swelled head roll
Then let our knight take one last kick–
An American field goal!
