Artistic Reckoning

Posted in Image Poetry, One Stop Poetry with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 1, 2011 by dustus

The following post for One Shot Wednesday is also my response to the latest Bookstains Poetry Challenge.  The challenge is write a poem about Grant Wood’s iconic painting American Gothic.  If interested in participating, then click here for details.

Approximately 650 miles from Winesburg, Ohio
Much nearer sticks to hospitable care
When boring wood lampooned beliefs
You may feel free
Bury me there

Ulysses & Grant would go home again
Iowa forgiving prodigal pride
Blond Emily Dickinson stares into oblivion
Poseidon’s prop gripped by father time

Behind them lies someone’s home
Spring arresting American plume
Sprouting hawthorn of unmentionable kinds
Reckoning they did die here too

Royalty
“What majesty should be”

Ransomed kings
Criticism to crow about
No RSS feeding enslavement
Without creativity crossing utility lines
Dotted eyes, black shadows sway in the wind

Eviscerating wastelanding tragic dross

Horse powered hamster wheels
The circle run
Bulldozers push, upturning
Severed doll parts, smushed milk cartoons
Fertile lies, careers

Clearing ski hill sized dumps
With reigns held back
Or maybe sold out
Through market trends, tickering taint
Puppeteers, overworked interns
And pimping agents!
…Ivanhoes, please
I am the terrible one

Sorry if you think this harsh
Borders now crossed to bright light
Our planet’s temperature like the sun also rises
As weeklies (as well as most companies) continue to set
Downsized they call it trend

Due preference of a millennial generation not buying newsprint
When smart phones pick up Starbucks Wi-Fi signals
It takes one faint pressured point to get to craigslist

Stop thinking in terms mechanical
There is room for dead language footnotes
References to forgotten mythologies
Get medieval if you so choose
Dropping, echoing pecks without whirring hums
Or the bleating squeals sparking old modems
After sticky relic taps played without electricity
Devoid of cut and paste, and literary nerds
Gutenberg couldn’t picture our days
Driven by Google search
Windows opening one’s Facebook page

Think about past artists’ shun
Censorship, blacklists, ex-patriots
In cyberspace remaining chance
Digest, you can’t erase this

“Brevity is the soul of wit”
Polonius first said it, ironically
Shakespeare could not imagine texts and retweets
Or a wired earth in which peer artists
Encourage creativity, support, universal broadband connections
Global renaissance through computer inventions
Where one’s key strokes lead to instant feedback
Which will not obscure death when broke hearts attack
For a single typefacing metal-headed ribbon slapping caste off

The Artist Formerly Known as Darth Vader

Posted in Image Poetry, One Shoot, One Stop Poetry with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 20, 2011 by dustus

Raindrops dampen four seasons
Sawing a black Stradivarius
instead of wrists
Having lost my right to joy and spring
“The Dark Side” is what I have left

Luke’s mom had channeled legal force
Citing “irreconcilable differences” for divorce
I’ve given up pride attempting to serenade her
You may call me “Busker,” or
“The Artist Formerly Known as Darth Vader”

Seaward Sent ( #oneshotwednesday poetry )

Posted in Image Poetry, One Stop Poetry with tags , , , , , , , , , , on February 15, 2011 by dustus

Eroding shoreline—noxious cloud
Bloody chum fed to sharks
After being asked out of love
Lampoons knife hooked hearts

Assailing claims this sodden course
Frail lists from sunk outpost
Unlike this boat, some ships won’t float
Seaward sent; blowhard boasts

What I believe remains naive
Low tide for trips not smart
Waiving emotion, capsized grief
No lighthouse guide through dark

Entering Threshold

Posted in Image Poetry, One Shoot, One Stop Poetry with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 13, 2011 by dustus

Welcome to the carcass house!
Floorboard mites, atrophy
Grey stone anatomy
With no need wiping fungal dung
Keep those cowboy boots buckled on
After dismounting your precious steed

This pane lest window blights shrieking
Pulling back, Trigger. Whoa!
Reign flimsy strings, mummified
When denial runs, inlet banks
Surge inner coursing
Fractals, geometric extant
Pointed toward the sky
Oblique, ziggurats
Monoliths, Argonauts
Not given up for life
It’s all that left when
Deconstructing lies

Pox upon this desolate prairie
Crop circle sightings of Virgin Mary
When minutes slough
Invective canaries
Dropping perched
Martyr failing

Sweet cat refugee
Bitter swallows
Walls weather-eaten
Restive hollow
Face stuffed with headcheese
Bloody rat feet
In time for Eliot, E.T.
Gremlins seething midnight feedings
Yellow oozing, leaven yeast
Juju beads that broke crowned teeth

Switchback too
Infected puss
Dull orange gritty rust
Fill ups, screws
Marking decay
For sighting backcrapward
Bleaching drunk
Sentry stains

Weakening carbon-based, nuclear cores
Interpolating Laura Ingalls Wilder
Cries “Aye me” to Prince Albert
Banks swelling upstream salmon
Eyeballs chocolate chip sized
Their spine combs coughed up
Hair balls among prancing Kodiak high fives
Chestbumping manboobs
Spawn from impotent steroids
Grand jury’s questions so appealing
Faux “twilight kingdom”
Ruled by ARod and Cameron Diaz
Some popcorn with your P.C. virus?
While hungry humans shout from rooftops
Won’t you please feed us!
As stocks and brokers jump

Replete, removed
Goosed mien, head shot, dead rot
Bulleye’s struck by rocketed snot
Roger Samuel Clemens, Shania Mark Twain
Wind swaying stalks, curling bark
Beavers crack chestnuts
Balks bucktooth central anteriors
Masticate ligaments, sinews
Drain shunt
Not Lake Superior
A rabid coyote drools
Chewing on a baseball
Have you seen it
Deer?

Much matter does not feel
Hunting venison beer drunk
Redneck chaw spit, upchuck
Back against crumbling pores
Survilalist grunts
Elk tracks in mud
Fossilized for saving dates
Cross-dissecting ring marks
Shouts of Timber!
Wane cherry ember
For a scrap book
One never remembers
Maimonides steril scapple
Love declared, healing care
Word born mass graves
Fuel our sad lives
Entering threshold frames
