Nothing I Can Explain
Dusk amber mellow
Old feelings hush
This quiet night
Being out of touch
You were right
Thought too much
Knowing now
Wasn’t luck
Steady highway sounds
Rush hour passage found
Like ocean waves crashing
Upon sturdy shoulders
Happy, laughing
Water splashing
Seagulls circle
Safe all landings
Could have been only five
Sun glare squinting open eyes
Closer to the sky I was
Beating any birthday surprise
While lives remain different
Never wanted moments the same
What always seems to stop me now
Nothing I can explain

I’m sure as we get older we overanalyze things. Recently I’ve spent hours trying to get to sleep, but walking within the depths of my own memory becomes a hobby of mine. I can miander until the sun comes up, which probably accounts for the black circles under my eyes. Nothing stops you apart from yourself, I’m the expert at this!

Hi Shan. Wearing glasses magnifies the dark memory circles under my eyes. lol Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You reminded me of what a lifelong friend of mine said to me way back in the day, “The greatest obstacle in life is yourself. Overcome it, and you will achieve the greatest accomplishment of all.” I think I was about seven when I began considering that statement. It has stuck with me π
Some context on the poem: This was written after I had a phone conversation with my dad. I was sitting in front of the computer, kicking back and thinking, relishing the fact that he said he was proud of me. Those words seemed to reduce me to feeling like a kid again for an instant. I was on top of the world. This piece is also about one of my earliest fond memories. There are a few personal jokes in this one, really a testament to my father’s sense of humor. Cheers.

I really like this SO MUCH, how you describe your emotions so vividly . Excellent poem! One of my favorite , dare I say your writing is improving tremendously. Keep it up , Adam. You know it is not LUCK when your writing is good, it is a lot of hard work and experiences in life that gives you the best foundation for expressing them through your writings . Bravo!

Thanks, Lawrence. Appreciate that. Let me share this: what really makes me enjoy this poem is that it ends with a joke, something he actually said that had us both laughing at my expense. Priceless moment. π Cheers
